As the holidays approach, we begin thinking of our gift-giving plans. We write lists, and go to shopping sites online. We may also consider self-giving activities in which we can engage, to spread goodwill and care for our fellow man.
Regardless of the season, the giving of things or time matters to the GIVER: They feel purpose, caring, and a sense of selflessness. It matters to the RECIPIENT: They receive a practical item, or needed ride to a medical appointment, or a little hope that they will make it through a tough time.
And it matters to the COMMUNITY: The “domino effect” occurs when you donate clothing, that someone wears to a job interview, or when a child shares a lunch with food received at the pantry to which you contribute, or as a volunteer reads a book you donated to a free bookshelf for kids. The struggles and successes we all experience are shared, and we become a part of something greater than ourselves.
So at this season of the year, and into 2018 , make use of United Way’s new 2017-2018 edition of the Give & Get Help Guide. Over 70 agencies are listed, with specific “giving” volunteer jobs and contact information you can access year-round. It is offered free of charge and can always be found at United Way of Marathon County, 705 S 24th Ave, Suite 400B, Wausau and local libraries as well as local newspaper racks while supplies last. An electronic copy of the Guide is also available.
Resources from United Way can help you be a better “giver” all year round!
