Bundles of Joy: A Holiday Program that Gives all Year
Where does a family turn when their infant needs diapers and payday is still four days away? There is no government program, like FoodShare, to cover the cost of diapers. So, before 2008, in Marathon County, families would turn to food pantries on the slim chance a package was available and perhaps even in the right size. Most often, pantries were unable to help.
For the past six years, during the holiday season, United Way Volunteer Connection has coordinated a gift wrap center at the Wausau Center Mall run exclusively by volunteers. For over 30 days, roughly 400 community and corporate volunteers wrap gifts for donations. The funds raised are used to purchase emergency diapers and formula and are distributed to families in need throughout the following year. Since 2008, nearly 8,000 families have been helped with diapers and over 500 families have received formula.
The value of this program, called Bundles of Joy, is best illustrated by the actions of a young father who used Bundles of Joy when facing hard times: “Here,” the father said as he handed the receptionist two packages of diapers. “I want to return the diapers we used. Things are looking much better for me and my family and I want there to be diapers for the next family that needs diapers. Thank you for helping me when I needed it most.”
Please support Bundles of Joy this holiday by bringing your gifts to to the Sears wing of the Wausau Center Mall to be wrapped. Be as generous as you can when you leave a donation. Your contribution will help keep another baby fed and dry.
